Debate Tomorrow

Posted by Patrick Rodriguez @ 6:27 pm
Under: GOP, UC Berkeley

Just a reminder: On Thursday, the Berkeley College Republicans and the Berkeley Stop the War Coalition will be holding a debate on whether military recruiters should be allowed on campus or not. It starts at 7:30 PM in 145 Dwinelle.

You might remember the dueling protests on this issue last semester.

Feel free to discuss the issue here before and after the debate.

  1. A “debate” with those clowns? Go easy on them, and don’t hurt them.

  2. James and Andrew are going to chew them up and spit them out. This will be almost as one-sided as the debate we had with the Stop the War Coalition three or so years ago over Iraq.

  3. The problem is who decides who wins?

  4. Unless it’s a blowout, each side will think they won. There is never any objective judgement of a winner in these debates. Berkeley Stop the War Coalition will blow it, like they did last time, by relying on socialist bullshit answers and arguments.

  5. They blow other things too.

  6. If I wanted GOP talking points I’ll go to the website.

  7. It was very convenient that the Republicans “don’t know enough about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to have an opinion about it.

  8. How was the debate?

  9. It was about what you’d expect. I think the dog won.

    Comment by Beetle — 9/16/2005 @ 12:37 pm

  10. Who would bring a dog in, seriously? Anywho, convenient, eh? At least someone admitted they did not personallly know something as opposed to making up some random bullshit. And what schools teach kids how to shoot guns and use grenades? Definitely not mine! And our JROTC didn’t use their filled rifles to practice shooting, they twirled them around and such. They were actually quite good at it, too. I have never had a bad experience with a military recruiter. And besides, as long as I’ve been on campus, I’ve had more info thrown at me from the Campus Crusade for Christ than I have from the military.

  11. Veronica, DADT is not some tangental issue. It is central to the question of military recruitment, particularly in light of Fair vs. Rumsfeld which BCR never seemed to address. And while BCR, when it suited them, said “Iraq has nothing to do with recruitment” (i.e. “You’re making our rosy portrait of the war look bad, so we’ll split hairs”), it was they whose opening statement was along the lines of: “We must remember: We are in a WAR.” If they talk about the war, we talk about the war. But if they suddenly want to stop talking about the war, let’s talk about DADT. And be prepared to take a position. This is not some obscure controversy. Additionally, BCR knew that recruitment would be the subject of debate since May. “Admitting they did not personally know something,” was a cop-out for someone who would have looked hypocritical had he supported the policy and who would have alienated the macho war cheerleaders he was representing had he actually come out against it.
