Berkeley Streakers

Posted by Patrick Rodriguez @ 11:12 pm
Under: Humor, UC Berkeley

As is tradition during finals week, a bunch of Berkeley students go streaking through the library. No one but the organizers know beforehand when and where the run will take place, but those in the right place at the right time get to witness a time-honored Berkeley tradition. Though nothing will ever take the place of being there, with the power of the internet and cameraphone technology, the rest of us aren’t deprived a peek.

Here is the inital LiveJournal report, which includes an account of the police response and some anonymous comments by an actual particpant. In a later post, another student provided a link to a video clip. From my estimates, around 50-60 students partcipated, but you can judge for yourself. Below the fold are some NSFW screencaps.

  1. Crazy Berkeley Hippies

As was mentioned a few days ago, the most arrogant people I encounter on a day-to-day basis are most often Berkeley hippies (and those who pretend to be). Here’s another example; crazy Berkeley students think we want to see their ugly asses. Emphasize…

  2. DAMN, that bitch in second to last photo needs to go on a diet. I bet you if she ran to taco bell to get some food after this streak, everyone would have run for the border.

  3. I cant believe some students think its funny. If I was there books would be flying at these bastards.

  4. Next semester, I say the Patriot puts in a spy for this. This person will pretend to join them, then steal all their clothes (wherever they keep them) right after they go streaking.

Then they’ll get arrested cause they’ll be walking around naked and unable to find their clothes.

  5. The co-ops organize a streak once a semester during finals… it was a nonpartisan streak, not just hippies… plenty of co-op republicans took part… including myself…

  6. I’m amazed that my classmates can be as bitter and horrible as a few of you have been in response to the streakers. Making fun of someone’s weight is an incredibly lowbrow, rude thing to do- I know that there are quite a few Republicans out there who aren’t too attractive naked, either! “Hippies” aren’t the only people who are overweight or have “ugly asses.”
The streaking is a fun way to break up the stress of finals- It’s a tradition and completely harmless.
You should definitely lighten up and enjoy these goofy college traditions.

  18. Streaking through the library is about instilling alternative values during finals, a time when people can become lost in formalities and practicalities. Nudity is natural and fun and should be more acceptable. i love streakers and i think they are a ray of sunshine on the Berkeley campus.

Public nudity is not against the law in Berkeley. If you don’t believe me, try googling “THe Naked Guy” + “UC Berkeley”

  30. I saw nudity at UCSC in form of first rain. Over there it was more crazy as most of the undergrads ran naked when it first rained.
But then i guess both Berkeley and UCSC are considered to be haven for hippie minded ppl

  32. I think I look pretty good naked, but I still wouldn’t assume that others would want to see the goods. Plus it’s a stupid thing to do.

    Comment by cw — 12/21/2005 @ 9:43 am

  33. Dude! People! Stop being so sensitive. If you are ugly and/or fat and you go streaking naked through a library people are going to mock you.

Whether or not only “hippies” participate in this silliness, the point of my original comment was that apparently people in Berkeley think they are above abiding by the basic rules of our civilization. (And then they can’t take the heat for acting like weirdos.)

    Comment by Cardinal Martini — 12/21/2005 @ 11:30 am

  34. “[A]pparently people in Berkeley think they are above abiding by the basic rules of our civilization.”

And that’s one of the things that makes Berkeley great.

Are we going to see some moralizing postering in this thread about how clothing is the thin thread that holds civilization together? Remove the thread, and we become nomadic barbarian hoards? Or maybe streaking leads to bestiality and incest?

  36. And to think that, at least in Utah (http://kutv.com/local/local_story_353231335.html), this kind of conduct might bring criminal charges and a spot on a national database of sex offenders!

    Comment by RemoteViewer — 12/21/2005 @ 6:56 pm

  37. Donald,

My point is not that the act of wearing clothing in public is per se the “thin thread that holds together civilization.” Rather, my point is that streaking naked in public and then whining because people criticize you is clearly a symptom of a larger psychological disorder you and your comrades suffer. You think you should not only be above conducting yourself in public according to what is generally considered appropriate, but you think you should be above reading a contrary opinion on the matter.

If you think disregarding the basic rules of our civilization is great then why concern yourself with answering my criticism at all? If my opinion is nothing more than “moralizing postering [sic]” why engage in a bourgeois exchange of ideas in the first place by posting a reply? (After all, my merely pointing out your absurdities on an internet thread doesn’t affect you one way or the other.)

And finally, thanks for being so coherent. Can we say non sequitur? I couldn’t care less about either bestiality or incest; you may defend acting like a nomadic barbarian till you’re blue in the face, just don’t be so damn arrogant about it.

    Comment by Cardinal Martini — 12/21/2005 @ 6:57 pm

  38. Cardinal Martini,

You’re reading a bit too much into my words. Your comment that streaking goes against “the basic rules of our civilization,” reminded me of similar claims that marriage equality somehow leads to the usurping of society. I wasn’t entirely serious, but I can see that my words weren’t clear. No offense.

And for what it’s worth, I was not a participant in the above, though I tangentially know at least 2 participants.

As for your posts’ anti-Marxist (?) criticism, I’ll choose to ignore your, um, cosmopolitan ways for now, though I don’t recall suggesting that I think I should be above reading a “contrary opinion”.

And I recognized that “moralizing postering” wasn’t kosher English, but I couldn’t come up with a better wording. Any suggestions?

  39. But I do love the username!

    Comment by Donald — 12/21/2005 @ 8:37 pm

  40. Donald,

Fine. Truce. I think we’ve both spent too much time on this topic anyway. If people want to run naked through a library it’s no skin off my nose. But I reserve the right to mock them.

And I agree — or at least presume we agree — that marriage equality will not bring about the end of Western Civilization. (So don’t lump me in with the people who do.)

The rest: Adding [sic] was a silly shot on my part; arguing in anti-Marxist terms is more fun than not; thanks for the compliment about the username (sometimes I regret it since it makes me sound like I’m from Stanford, but calling myself Trojan Cocktail would probably give the wrong impression).

    Cheers!

  42. Who cares if they’re ugly. It’s a great tradition, and at least they had the guts to get out there and have fun, unlike all you armchair streakers. I’m also willing to bet you’re nearly all guys, which means its unlikely you shave your bodies either. But don’t correct me on that, I treasure my ignorance.
