Break the ASUC Slates!
I was fully expecting that the ASUC slates would be available online somewhere by now. I would have posted them last week, but I’ve been told to keep it on the DL. Anyway, information wants to be free and all so I’m going to take advantage of a loophole and let you readers collaboratively fill out the following. Once a consensus is reached on a position, I’ll update the post with your information (not mine).
UPDATE: a CalStuff commenter finally lets the cat out of the bag. There is still a major independent candidate to fill in though…
UPDATE 2: Excellent, CalStuff has it all now plus senate candidates too. Paste:
PRESIDENT
Bell, Thomas - Independent
Gabriel, Oren Benjamin - Student Action
Karasek, Lauren Suzanne - SQUELCH!
O’Leary, Pammy - Independent
Ratto, Andrew - BEARS UNITED
EXECUTIVE VP
Gupta, Vishal Kumar - Student Action
Narodick, Ben - SQUELCH!
ACADEMIC VP
Liou, Joyce - Student Action
O’Connor, John - SQUELCH!
Ratto, Andrew - BEARS UNITED
EXTERNAL VP
Chu, Jason MacArthur - Student Action
Ratto, Andrew - BEARS UNITED
Tregub, Igor - INDEPENDENT
Waste, John - SQUELCH!
Continue to let the gossip flow. We’ll have much more commentary as the campaign season starts for real.

I believe Ben Narodick is running for Executive VP under Squelch.

Jesus is running for external affairs VP.

“Jesus is running for external affairs VP.”
That dude can roll.
Comment by Morbo — 3/28/2006 @ 3:51 pm
You’re forgetting the BEARS United party, which has returned to the ASUC elections and is planning on outdoing last year’s insanity. BU has slated Andy Ratto to run for their entire executive slate. [It’s going to be awesome!]
Comment by Andy R. — 3/28/2006 @ 3:52 pm
Heh, funny you should mention that. I was scanning through the ASUC minutes a few days ago and saw something about you and BU. I guess we all know what that was about now. Can’t wait to see your platform(s).

Is Jesus a SAer or CalSERVEer?
Comment by patr — 3/28/2006 @ 4:06 pm
Dude, Jesus doesn’t need a party.
Comment by Beetle — 3/28/2006 @ 4:44 pm
Maybe I should make “Jesus” one of my nicknames…. would that piss off the christian folk?

[…] Anyway, as far as slating goes, the Patriot Blog has some kind of guessing game going on here. Someone IMed me most of the Student Action slate a while ago but I can’t remember what they told me. I’ll ask again in the next couple of days (or someone can leave a comment if they know what’s going on). I have heard from two very knowledgeable sources that CalSERVE isn’t running an executive slate. I’m the BEARS United slate. And as far as Squelch goes, I know three of the four people, but I’ll ask Ben to post who we slated this year. […]

Oh, and as my calstuff post mentioned, I’ve heard that CS didn’t slate anyone. We’ll see soon if that is accurate.
Comment by Andy R. — 3/28/2006 @ 5:40 pm
We heard that also, but we’re under lock and key as to specifics.

I honestly think that Republicans need to stop voting for SA in droves. Republicans at Berkeley to the ASUC are like blacks to the Democratic party. How many republicans is SA running? Do they care about Republicans? No way. SPlit the vote and force both sides to consider conservative votes.
Comment by RepBast1984 — 3/28/2006 @ 6:51 pm
The Patriot should endorse other candidates. They’ve endorsed majority SA candidates for more than 3 years in a row. SA treats Republicans like they have them in their pocket. And then what do they do once they’re in power? SA under the last adminstrations gave less money to BCR than under a CalSERVE administration. Think about it guys.
Comment by RepBast1984 — 3/28/2006 @ 6:54 pm
Speaking for myself, we’ll endorse the best candidate at every position, regardless of party.
Comment by Morbo — 3/28/2006 @ 7:09 pm
Is it too late for me to try for the Patriot Endorsement. I think I got a second choice endorsement last year (but I don’t remember for sure). Who do I talk to about that?
Comment by Andy R. — 3/28/2006 @ 8:06 pm
Jesus must be running as a stealth candidate.
Comment by Beetle — 3/28/2006 @ 10:07 pm
Prediction: The Patriot will endorse SA like they always do claiming that SA isn’t the ideal party but they are much better than the alternatives and SA will continue to ignore conservatives because they assume they have their unconditional support. That last part isn’t a naive claim, it’s based on what certain SA people have admitted to me in the past.

One big difference this year is that it seems that CalSERVE isn’t going to run a slate… That would be like the Dems sitting out an election. A lot of conservatives vote Republican because they prefer them over the Dems, however slightly. Without the Dems, there is actually an opportunity for more conservative 3rd party candidates to win. I would personally vote Libertarian if it were solely between them and the GOP, for example. When there’s no longer a reason to “vote against” someone, you can actually vote your conscience.
Comment by patr — 3/28/2006 @ 11:22 pm
Only if you consider SQUELCH! to be a more conservative 3rd party. The only exception I can see would be The Patriot endorsing Igor Tregub, who has probably done the most to help republicans as a Senator.
Comment by cw — 3/29/2006 @ 7:51 am
I agree with cw. Igor has always stood up for BCR and Republicans. I want people to consider how much Student Action has done for campus republicans. Under the last regime, they gave BCR less money than Cal Dems. Under a CalSERVE administration, BCR got more money. I’m not saying CalSERVE serves Republican interests but Student Action surely doesn’t. Igor was the only senator who stood up for Republicans and look how well SA treated him.
SA assumes they have the conservative vote just like the Dems assume they have the black vote. And when I approach them about Republican interests they tell me things like “you’re better off with us than with CalSERVE”. How is that when they can’t name a single reason why Republicans should support them.
Now that CalSERVE is out of the picture I really hope BCR members consider members of SQELCH who have actually supported Republican interests in the past, even if they disagree with Republicans.
Comment by RepBast1984 — 3/30/2006 @ 9:33 am
Well I agree about supporting SQUELCH! over SA but not because they’ve necessary done more to help republicans. SQUELCH! candidates just tend to be better informed of what’s going on, whereas SA candidates have to figure it out after they are elected. SA also tends to run Dimwights.
Comment by cw — 3/30/2006 @ 9:40 am
Why doesn’t this site list the Student Advocate Office Candidates? Does the Patriot or CalDems/Smartass do endorsements for them?
Comment by ASUC Voter — 3/30/2006 @ 1:16 pm
didn’t you misspell that last word?
Comment by thought_croime — 3/30/2006 @ 1:22 pm
thought_croime, if you’re referring to my comment, then no I didn’t.
Comment by cw — 3/30/2006 @ 1:35 pm
Yeah you did. The proper way is ‘Dimwight-washed’.
Am I right? Or am I right?
Comment by thought_cr0ime — 3/30/2006 @ 1:45 pm
LOL. Ouch.
Comment by cw — 3/30/2006 @ 7:31 pm
Since we’re not really trying to keep this stuff secret…
The Patriot is endorsing Oren Gabriel, Joyce Liou, Ben Narodick, and Igor Tregub.
Frankly, Oren really impressed us in his interview. He seems very realistic, he knows his limits, and his ideas for what he wants to do with the office actually sound both modest and doable. People may not like him for whatever reason, but we were impressed. Well, I was at least.
Ben and Igor were simply outstanding - I think I can speak for the Editorial Board when I say we couldn’t be rooting for them more.
Comment by Morbo — 3/30/2006 @ 10:34 pm
If I were Joyce Liou, would I take the above comment to mean I was endorsed by default?
Comment by Beetle — 3/30/2006 @ 11:10 pm
Nah, just that I, personally, don’t have anything really to say about her.
Comment by Morbo — 3/30/2006 @ 11:16 pm
Its a surprise that Ben Narodick, one of the most outspoken senators for the NO On 73 Scandal is being endorsed by BCR. This is perhaps one of the issues that angered republicans the most this year and Ben ignored the conservative voice.
Comment by Common Sense — 4/2/2006 @ 4:10 am
And by ignored the conservatives you mean disagreed with the conservativss.
Comment by Donald — 4/2/2006 @ 6:18 am
Because Ben has a good track record of doing things. He’s also outspoken against giving the GA more power at no cost. He also was outspoken in defense of the rules during last year’s post-election cry-babying. If the Patriot only endorsed those with whom they agreed with on everything, it would be a lonely endorsement page.
Comment by Beetle — 4/2/2006 @ 8:39 am
Uh… also, as a disclaimer, I don’t work for the Patriot, so I had no say in the decision. I’m just saying why Ben is a good choice for conservatives.
Comment by Beetle — 4/2/2006 @ 8:40 am
The right choice for conservatives is the Mario Party. You will all be shocked!
