Election Results Open Thread
UPDATE: CalStuff and Jeremy Koo both liveblogged the election results. Check them out.
Let’s give it up for Ben and Igor who both put up a good fight against the goliath. It was close. And congrats to Victoria Mitchell who will be representing BCR on the senate.

The ASUC election results will finally be released today. You can find out in person 7 pm in 166 Barrows. Or if that’s not your thing, you can just wait for the news to hit the web.
Feel free to discuss whatever you want relating to the election on this post.
In the mean time, in preparation for a Student Action sweep (oh dear), Student Action chair and Troy High Class of ‘02 graduate Suken Vakil shares some kind words for his constituents:

Oh, man. That’s so him. You should add “one-day chalk” between his names every time you refer to him.

Congratulations to Victoria Mitchell for being the first ever senator-elect on the BCR ticket, and special thanks to Amaury Gallais for providing the leadership necessary to make the campaign a success.

First ever? Wasn’t LaFata on the BCR ticket once?
Comment by Beetle — 5/25/2006 @ 7:25 am
No thankx for the people who voted for her? Wow, I feel cheap and like a chump now.

Beetle,
You’re right (though I think that James Gallagher was also a BCR senator, but I could be mistaken. I was not a Berkeley student at that time). Anyway, this is the first time a BCR candidate has won a senate slot. Amaury failed miserably during his campaign, and Melissa Jones only became a senator when Igor Tregub resigned, thereby becoming only a senator by default.
Comment by ktp — 5/25/2006 @ 9:25 am
Correction: This is the first time a BCR candidate won since Paul La Fata, which is 3 years ago.
Comment by ktp — 5/25/2006 @ 9:28 am
Yeah, I think Gallagher was, too, though it’s all pretty hazy. I was a student at that time. I have a white beard and a rocking chair, too.
Comment by Beetle — 5/25/2006 @ 9:38 am
Paul LaFata was in Apple I think, he wasn’t running as a BCR candidate.
Also Melissa Jones was the first one last year, when she became a senator when Igor resigned. I believe that counts as having won.
Comment by Yuriy — 5/25/2006 @ 12:03 pm
I know Paul ran as APPLE once, but I think he ran as BCR once. I don’t recall if he won that time.
Comment by Beetle — 5/25/2006 @ 12:22 pm
Paul LaFata ran BCR in 2002. The following year he ran for EVP and Senate under APPLE (before it became part of Student Action) and Julia Baumgartner ran as the BCR Senate candidate. Julia didn’t win a spot in the Senate and Paul didn’t win EVP, but Paul was elected to another term as Senator.
Comment by cw — 5/25/2006 @ 5:22 pm
I should make clear that I meant: Paul ran as a BCR candidate for Senate in 2002.
Comment by cw — 5/25/2006 @ 5:22 pm
I apologize for the mistake about Victoria being the first BCR nominee elected to the Senate; I was wrongly informed by someone else. In fact, James Gallagher was elected on the BCR ticket in 2001. Paul LaFata ran in 2002 as the BCR nominee but did he win that year, or only the following year when he ran as the APPLE candidate?
Comment by Rohit J. Joy — 5/25/2006 @ 6:51 pm
So let me revise my earlier post to say congratulations to Victoria for being the first senator-elect on the BCR ticket in 4-5 years, thanks to Amaury for managing her campaign, and thanks to all who campaigned and voted for her.
Comment by Rohit J. Joy — 5/25/2006 @ 6:55 pm
The elections council chair just announced that there was an error in linking candidate numbers to candidate names in the tabulation program. As a result, Charles Shin was wrongly declared the 3rd place finisher in the Senate race. It turns out that Ali Ansary came in 3rd, not Charles Shin.
Charles Shin actually came in 21st, so he is the first alternate.
Comment by Rohit J. Joy — 5/25/2006 @ 7:09 pm
Yes, Paul LaFata won in 2002 for Senate and also in 2003 for Senate.

I’m in Cabo and that picture just made my day. Oh, the power of stupid people.
Comment by Ben N. — 5/26/2006 @ 11:17 am
I’m pretty sure Ivan Jen won election to the Senate as a BCR candidate too, before James Gallagher. You Republicans do have a track record of electoral success on this campus.
