The Chron’s Straight Shooter
The San Francisco Chronicle is endorsing Pete McCloskey over incumbent Richard Pombo in the upcoming Republican primary:
Pete McCloskey defines the term “straight shooter.” He has never seen the world through a partisan prism when it comes to delineating right from wrong…
“My hope would be to broaden the Republican Party to where it includes moderates again,” McCloskey said during a recent meeting with our editorial board.
It’s an uphill fight in the conservative-leaning 11th Congressional District. But Pete McCloskey has the credentials to make the case — and to shake up the status quo in Washington. He gets our endorsement in the June 6 Republican primary.
Volokh points out that the LA Times is also endorsing McCloskey (interesting, as it’s a Bay Area seat), calling him “the best thing that could happen for the district, the state, the nation and possibly the Republican Party.” Volokh also offers this choice quote:
McCloskey said at the time [2000], “I don’t know whether you are right or wrong about the Holocaust,” and referred to the “so-called Holocaust.”
Straight shooting…

It takes an awful lot to make Pombo the preferable candidate in a primary. Congrats to your party.

L.A. Times & S.F. Chronicle Endorse Congressman Who Spoke of “So-Called Holocaust”:…
When the L.A. Times endorsed former Congressman Pete McCloskey for Congress, and said he was “the best thing that could happen for the district, the state, the nation and possibly the Republican Party,” wouldn’t it have be……

“Let me address several obvious questions about my candidacy. First, I am indeed somewhat of a carpet bagger…”
“I will work for a farmer-friendly Endangered Species Act ”
“my differences with the Administration. I believe human-caused global warming ”
I’m retarded, because in the 12th century when global warming heated up, Greenland, I believed Beowolf created automobiles and had them running all over the world. This caused a mini-ice-age. You see the LA Times supports me because I made up fabrications of the likes of them telling us that there never was blue dress; and that anyone thinking there was can be considered an idiot. Yes you are an idiot. There never was a blue dress even after Monica showed it to the world and the DNA matched the non-liar. I must return to the cave to look at my reflection now. Thank you for your time.

Well, it’s invevitable that if a political discussion goes on long enough someone will bring up Hitler or the Holocaust (seriously, it’s a statistical law) but this happened right from the get-go.
Sounds like a race with a couple of real winners.
But do Republicans actually give a shit about who the Chronicle endorses? Seems like it would be the kiss of death for a red candidate…

Strange to see a post Godwinned in the initial post…

Do Republicans give a shit about who the Chronicle endorses? Of course we do! It lets us know who NOT to vote for! The same goes for the Bay Guardian.

No I believe it is the same with the LA Times. To whomever they support on the Republican Ticket, just vote the opposite and your choice is usually the right one.
