Here we go

By Bryant Milesi
From the September 2008 Print Edition

I want to welcome you to another exciting year on the UC Berkeley campus. Last year was filled with many crazy Berzerkeley demonstrations, such as those creatures sitting in the trees or the angry Code Pink group protesting the Marine recruiting center. You can bet this year will have similar radical left performances.

Aside from campus politics, 2008-2009 is a time for the presidential campaign season. As we get closer to the presidential election in November, politics will be at a fever pitch, with Democrats praying to “Obama the Almighty”. Also in November, there will be many ballot initiatives in California, such as the controversial gay marriage amendment. So, you can count on the California Patriot to be at the forefront for conservatives in this year’s battle against democrats and the crazy liberals on the Berkeley campus.

However, in the first issue of the Patriot for this school year, we begin by showing you what the liberal group, Move On, has been doing this summer to try to spread false rumors about John McCain. Written by Margaret Mele, the article is in defense of McCain and can be read on Page 12. If you want to increase your knowledge about conservative politics, we offer you websites, think tanks, and much more on Page 16. Also, on Page 22 you can read about Alex Bustamante’s argument for offshore oil drilling in the U.S. to help limit our dependence on foreign oil. On Pages 24 and 25, we have a debate on the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling this summer that the State of Louisiana can not execute a man for the rape of his eight year old stepdaughter. Andy Nevis argues that the court was right in not having the death penalty, while Danae Condos replies that Louisiana had state rights to execute the man. Finally on Page 27, Javier Tenorio provides readers with a first hand perspective on the war in Iraq. As a former Marine stationed in Iraq, Javier gives a view of the war that the media usually never does.

I hope you have a great start to the new school year. Go Bears!

Your compatriot,

Bryant Milesi
