On San Franciscos ID plan

Derek Yee is absolutely right in the December 2007 issue of the Patriot in his assessment of San Franciscos misguided attempt to give illegal immigrants identification cards. Such a move would provide an aura of legitimacy to people who are breaking the law. Moreover, forcing companies to hire individuals bearing such cards will only continue to encourage more illegal immigration. After all, businesses hardly need to be forced to hire illegal immigrants. They already do so in droves. This law would merely give them the protection to do it in the open and flagrantly rather than covertly violate federal laws. With more jobs comes more illegal immigration and the problem spirals. While Yee is correct on the flaws in San Franciscos plan, his prescription for the problem of illegal immigration (deportation) is out of synch with reality. This article highlights the continuing need for rational and comprehensive immigration reform. We have to understand that there are jobs in this country that need to be filled by labor from south of the border. We need our laws to reflect reality. Immigrants must have a way to access jobs that are not being filled by citizens. These immigrants must be registered so we know exactly who is here and they must be here for a fixed and limited period of time or they must be put on a path to becoming a citizen, which may include paying back fees and taxes and must include learning English. Only when reality is understood and common-sense methods like these are taken can we end the nonsense and demagoguery coming from both the far left and the far right over immigration and provide a solution that works for everyone in America and that is in line with our laws and our beliefs.
