The Clintons' lost love letters

Where you shouldn’t spend your summer vacation

From the February 2008 Print Edition

After several attempts by the Clinton family to conceal these letters, historians and scholars were finally given the opportunity to review the correspondences between Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham.

January 17, 1972 Dear Bill, I don’t know why my friends think we shouldn’t be together, but I don’t care what my friends think. I am confident that we were meant for each other. I swear, sometimes I feel like my social life is run like a plantation, and you know what I am talking about. Always yours, Hill

April 8, 1972 Dear Bill, Some people on campus told me that you are flirting with other girls again. I refuse to believe it though. I know our love is so strong that this country won’t be able to afford it. I will try not to let the rumor mill get me down. It’s all part of a vast right-wing conspiracy anyway. Yours forever, Hill

July 23, 1972 Dear Hill, What you saw in the stacks isn’t what it seems. You have to really define cheating in a very narrow way to accuse me of it. After all, what is cheating? What is is? Love, Bill

July 24, 1972 Dear Hillary, I deeply regret that you caught me with another girl. I am indeed sorry. In fact, it was wrong. I will, to the best of my ability, do what I can to make sure that I am never caught cheating again. If the temptation presents itself, I will simply think of you. The very thought of you prevents me from doing anything at all with another women. Love, Bill
